Asia Rising is an open-access handbook. It presents Asia’s history through an international-relations lens, covering colonization, imperialism, the Cold War, decolonization, democratization, the rise of China, and regionalism in Asia. The book is aimed at advanced students, researchers, and lecturers who want a broad, scholarly overview of Asia’s historical and geopolitical development. It also emphasizes the Indo-Pacific’s strategic role in global geopolitics and seeks to offer an Asia-centred alternative to more Western-authored textbooks.
 
Ryo Sahashi is a Professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo, specializing in international politics, East Asian security architecture, U.S.-China rivalry, Japan’s security policy, and Indo-Pacific regional order. He previously served as Professor of International Politics and Director of the Center for Asian Studies at Kanagawa University, and held visiting positions at Stanford University and the Australian National University; he earned his PhD from the University of Tokyo’s Graduate Schools for Law and Politics in 2008. Sahashi is also a Research Fellow at the Japan Center for International Exchange and a non-resident scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Yasuhiro Matsuda 
is an Associate Professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo, with expertise in Asian political and diplomatic history, China-Taiwan relations, and Cross-Strait dynamics. He spent 16 years at Japan’s National Institute for Defense Studies as a Senior Research Fellow before joining the University in 2008, and has been a visiting fellow at institutions like the Henry L. Stimson Center, Fudan University, and others; he holds a PhD in Law from Keio University. 

​Waka Aoyama 
is a Professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, University of Tokyo, focusing on Southeast Asian economics, ethics, and ethnography, particularly Sama-Bajau communities in the Philippines and Mindanao. She earned her BA and MA in Commerce from Keio University, PhD in Economics from the University of Tokyo in 2002, and was a Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholar (2013-14) and Visiting Researcher at Ateneo de Davao University. Her career includes positions at Hokkaido University, Nihon University, and others.
