Cruciformity: Paul's Narrative Spirituality of the Cross.
Michael J. Gorman.

William B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. 2001. ISBN:  9780802847959.

Michael Gorman’s Cruciformity argues that Paul’s spirituality is fundamentally a Spirit-enabled participation in the self-giving, cross-shaped life of Christ, which reshapes believers and communities in the pattern of the crucifixion. Cruciformity is Gorman’s term for conformity to the crucified Christ—a participation in the very life of the God who is revealed as self-giving, others-oriented love in the cross. He defines Paul’s spirituality as narrative spirituality: a dynamic life that corresponds to the divine story, especially the story of Christ’s self-emptying, death, and exaltation.

Michael J. Gorman is a leading New Testament scholar specialising in Pauline theology, particularly the participationist perspective, where believers share in Christ’s cruciform life.  He holds the Raymond E. Brown Chair in Biblical Studies and Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he has taught since 1991. Born and raised in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Gorman graduated from Glen Burnie High School.
He earned a B.A. summa cum laude in French from Gordon College (1977), followed by an M.Div. (1982) and Ph.D. cum laude in New Testament from Princeton Theological Seminary (1989), where he served as a teaching fellow under Bruce Metzger. Gorman joined St. Mary’s Seminary in 1991, serving as Dean of the Ecumenical Institute of Theology from 1994 to 2012.
He has been a visiting professor at institutions including Duke Divinity School, Wesley Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Notre Dame de l’Espérance in Cameroon.
An active United Methodist layperson, he teaches in Catholic and ecumenical contexts.
