Ludwig van Beethoven, wrote his Diabelli Variations, a set of variations for solo piano, between 1819 and 1823, and dedicated it Antonie Bretano, an Austrian noble. It all began when Diabelli, a well-known music publisher and composer, sent a waltz music piece to all the important composers of the Austrian Empire, requesting each to write a variation on it. The profits from the publication of these variations, the Vaterlandischer Kunstlerverein, were to benefit orphans and widows of the Napoleonic Wars. The Diabelli Variations have often been considered one of the greatest sets of keyboard variations along Bach’s Goldberg Variations.
