Sergei Rachmaninov composed his finest work and the greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox Church, an a cappella choral, in February 1915. It premiered on 10 March 1915 in Moscow and it was warmly received. The texts were taken from the Russian Orthodox All-Night Vigil ceremony. Rachmaninov based ten of the fifteen sections on chant, with complex use of harmony, textual variety and polyphony. He requested that the fifth movement ( i.e., Nunc dimittis) be sung at his funeral. Here are four recommended albums: Rachmaninoff, All-Night Vigil. Ekaterina Antonenko, with Igor Morozov, Evgeny Kachurovski, Alexis V. Lukianov, and Patram Institute Male Choir.
