Bela Bartok composed his best-known five-movement orchestral work in 1943. It was commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation following his emigration to the United States, from his native Hungary, due largely to the commencement of World War II. He was suffering from leukemia at the time. It premiered on December 1, 1944, in Symphony Hall, Boston, by the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Serge Koussevitzky. The 38 minutes piece is unlike a conventional concerto composition, featuring solo instruments with orchestral complement. Bartok made major revisions, especially in the last movement, in February 1945, and this version is universally performed today. These are four albums to start with: Bartok Concerto pour Orchestra, Concerto pour Alto, Alexandre Bloch and Orchestre National de Lille. Label: Alpha. Bartok The Concerto Album, Rafael Kubelik and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Label: Warner Classics. Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, Ivan Fischer and Budapest Festival Orchestra. Label: Philips. Bela Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, Susanna Malkki and Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Label: BIS. Reference: MacDonald, H., (2024), Concerto for Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra.
