​Franz Liszt completed the Piano Sonata in B Minor, dedicated to Robert Schumann, in 1853. It was first performed by Hans von Bulow in Berlin on 27 January 1857. Apart from a few music critics, the Sonata was generally reviewed negatively due to its technical difficulty and perceived status as ‘new music.’ Not until early 20th century did it become commonplace in concert circuits and accepted as a pinnacle of Liszt’s repertoire. Since then, the Sonata is one of the most extensively analyzed piece of piano music.
