Claude Debussy, a late Romantic composer bridging the Impressionism and Modernism genre of music, completed his most popular and widely performed concert work La Mer (The Sea, three symphonic sketches for orchestra) in March 5, 1905 at the Grand Hotel, Eastbourne, U.K. It was Debussy’s second of three orchestral pieces in three sections, and it illustrated his consummate skill in symphonic scene-painting rendered through the medium of sound. La Mer was an appreciation of the sea and its beauty as he fondly recalled during his childhood years. The three sections described respectively the sea from dawn to midday, the play of the waves, and the dialogue between the wind and the sea. It premiered in Paris in October 1905. Subsequently, Debussy arranged La mer for piano for four hands. A second edition with revisions was published in 1909.
