Antonio Vivaldi wrote hundreds of concerti, but only about 500 survived. Of these, approximately 230 are written for solo violin, 40 for bassoon, 25 for cello, and 10 for flute. One of the single-most influential European music publication in the first half of the 18th century is L’estro armónico, published in 1711. It contains concertos featuring one, two, and four solo violins; the bright Italian style was imitated and admired by composers across Europe. Vivaldi’s next publication in 1716, was a set of twelve violin concertos called La stravaganza. These were marked by bizzare twists of harmony and exciting virtuosity, breaking new ground in harmony, structure and technical requirements. Il cimento dell’Armonia e dell’Inventione, published in 1725, was his third set of twelve concertos, comprising ten violin concertos and two oboe concertos. La Cetra, issued in 1727, contained twelve violin concertos. Its title refers to the lyre of Orpheus in Greek mythology, implying the charming music produced by the lyre. Several other sets were released subsequently. Here are four albums: Antonio Vivaldi, L’estro armónico. Rachel Podger and Brecon Baroque. Release Date: 16 Mar 2015. Label: Channel Classics.
