Sergei Prokofiev composed the three orchestral ballet suites Romeo and Juliet, based on William Shakespeare’s play, in 1936. A suite for solo piano was written at the same time. It was substantially revised, due largely to the Pravda purge of modernist musicians deemed to be counterrevolutionaries at the time. The conductor for its first performance at the Bolshoi Theatre was Yuri Fayer. The score was again revised by the choreographer Leonid Lavrovsky for the 1940 Kirov Theatre production in Leningrad on 11 January 1940, with Galina Ulanova and Konstantin Sergeyev in the leading roles. This production received international acclaim and was awarded the Stalin Prize. Here are four albums: Prokofiev, Romeo and Juliet, Op. 64, Valery Gergiev and London Symphony Orchestra.
