Johann Sebastian Bach composed a set of six works for solo violin in 1720 in Kothen, where he was Kapeilmeister; three sonatas da chiesa in four movements and three partitas in dance-form movements. These pieces were ignored till the celebrated violinist, Joseph Joachim, started performing them. Today, they are an essential part of the violin repertoire and served as archetypes for solo violin pieces by later generations of composers. Its most famous piece is the Chaconne in the 2nd Partita, considered to be one of the most masterly and expressive works ever written for solo violin. Here are four sets of albums: J.S.
