Joseph Haydn, the father of string quartet, wrote 68 quartets, arranged by their opus numbers between 1755 and 1803. The medium consists of four string instruments: two violins, a viola, and a violincello. He established the formal conventions and aesthetic values of the string quartets that gained them a special status and compositional significance in the Western musical culture. The German poet, Goethe, described the quartet in terms of a musical conversation among four rational people conversing among themselves. The Quartets are arbitrarily divided as the Early Quartets Nos. 1 – 35 (Opus 1 – 42; 1755 – 1785), Middle Quartets Nos. 36 – 59 (Opus 50 – 74; 1787 – 1793), and the Late Quartets Nos. 60 – 83 (Opus 76 – 103; 1797 – 1803). The first complete set was recorded by the Tatrai Quartet for Hungaroton from 1946 to 1984. Here is one set and a few separate albums: Haydn The Complete String Quartets. The Angeles String Quartet.
