Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the ballet Swan Lake in 1875 – 1876; now one of the most popular of all ballets, despite its initial failure. The ballet was premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet on 4 March 1877 at Moscow’s the Bolshoi Theatre, and Julius Reisinger was the choreographer. The present version which is staged by most ballet companies was first staged at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg on 15 January 1895, with the score revised by the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatre's chief conductor and composer, Riccardo Drigo. The scenario, in two acts, was fashioned from Russian and German folk tales on the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse.
