Edward Elgar wrote his finest choral work for voices and orchestra in two parts in 1900. The Dream of Gerontius was based on the poem by Cardinal John Henry Newman of the same name; on the journey of a pious soul from his deathbed to his judgment before God and settling into purgatory. It was composed for the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival, and the first performance took place at the Birmingham Town Hall on 3 October 1900. The premiere was a disaster as the preparation time was short and the conductor had to be changed at the last minute. However, the work became establish in Britain after its first London performance at the Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral on 6 June 1903.
