Sirius in the Night Sky

Sirius, known as the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the night sky. Its name comes from the Greek word Seirios, which means “glowing” or “scorching.” Sirius A has a radius 1.71 times that of the Sun and a surface temperature of 9,940 Kelvins. It is about twice as massive as the Sun. The system is estimated to be between 200 and 300 million years old. It is part of the constellation Canis Major, also known as the Greater Dog. Sirius is a binary star system comprising Sirius A and Sirius B. Sirius A is a blue-white star, approximately 25 times more luminous than the Sun. Sirius B is a faint white dwarf companion. The distance between Sirius A and B varies from 8.2 to 31.5 astronomical units, as they orbit each other every 50 years.
 
Sirius is only 8.6 light-years away and being so near to us, it shines some 400 times brighter than that entire M41 cluster which is about 2,300 light-years away. Its total magnitude adds up to 5.0. Sirius is gradually moving closer to the Solar System and is expected to increase slightly in brightness over the next 60,000 years, reaching a peak magnitude of -1.68.
 
Sirius has been known since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians knew Sirius as Sothis and noted its heliacal rising coincided with the Nile River’s annual floods. They believed Sothis caused the floods and discovered its heliacal rising occurred every 365.25 days. The Romans associated the hottest part of the year with the heliacal rising of the Dog Star, which is remembered in the expression “dog days.”
 
Presently, especially on Saturday, 22 February 2025, Sirius blazes high in the south on the meridian by about 8 or 9 p.m. now. Sirius is visible from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. In February, it parades overhead from nightfall until midnight. Additionally, atmospheric effects can make Sirius appear even more dazzling. When low in the sky, its light passes through more of Earth’s atmosphere, causing it to twinkle and flash with various colors, which further accentuates its brilliance.
